Access Runtime - Am I Missing Something?

Am I missing something?  Yesterday I saw several messages on this board
about all the problems everyone is having using an Access 97 runtime on a
computer that has Access 2000 or 2002 on it.

When you write your script, the toolkit allows you to tell it where to put
the runtime.  I have it install the runtime as a subfolder of my database's
folder, and  I have no problem running an A 97 runtime on a machine that has
A 2000 installed on it.

This is similar to installing multiple versions of full access on a
computer.  They have to be in different subdirectories.

So what am I missing?  What is the problem?

No, it allows you to tell it where to put the application.  The destination
for the office runtime is in Office97 | Install Root.  If there is no value
in the registry for Office97 | Install Root, then the office runtime goes
to "a subfolder of your database's folder".  If there is a value for
Office97 | Install Root, (for example c:\program files\MicrosoftOffice),
then the office runtime goes there.  That is particularly a problem when
Office 2000 has been installed on top of Office 97, and an old value
of Office97 | Install Root points to the Office 2000 folder.

Access Runtime - Am I Missing Something?
Hi Andrew,

You've given me an issue to think about, Installing A 2000 on top of A 97 in
the same subdirectory A 97 was in, and then installing A 97 or an A 97
Runtime.  So, thanks. On my own machines I always install Office 97 into a
folder named Office97, so I've never had a problem running multiple versions
of Access.  But it could be a problem on a customer's machine(s).

As far as the other issue, "Also, whenever you run a version of Access or
Runtime it associates itself with MDB's" I'm well aware of and I don't view
it as a big problem since it can be overcome by creating shortcuts
appropriately.

Since Office 2002 defaults into a different subdirectory then either A 97 or
A 2000, I don't think there will be too many problems there.

Thanks!

You can avoid this problem with A97 by editing MSACCESS.srg
I am not aware of any equivalent fix for A2K or XP

I looked in tech net and couldn't find anything on msaccess.srg.  Can you
direct me to a kb number?

Sorry, don't know any relevant kb.  Have a look inside the file
(It's text, so just use wordpad or notepad), and you should be
able to understand what it does.  It is the registry file that runs
every time A97 starts, if A97 isn't properly registered.
