How do I get my macros back???
While Word is closed down, rename the old normal.dot file (that was a .bak file)
to something like oldnormal.dot. Restart Word, which will create a new plain
normal.dot.
In the Tools | Templates and Add-Ins dialog, click the Organizer button. Go to
the Macros tab. On one side you should see "normal.dot" with an empty list box.
On the other side, click the Close File button, which changes to an Open File
button. Click it again, and pick oldnormal.dot. If you can see a list of items
there (they'll be modules, not individual macros), select them all and click the
Copy button. Then close the dialog, close Word, and answer Yes to the question
about saving normal.dot.
If the Organizer doesn't show you any modules in oldnormal.dot, it's probably
time to give up.
It's because of situations like this that we recommend you put your permanent
macro collection into templates other than normal.dot, and store them in Word's
Startup folder. That way they're accessible in all documents, but not likely to
get wiped out by the almost inevitable disasters that involve normal.dot. For
obvious reasons, macro viruses tend to target normal.dot for destruction rather
than some other template whose name is unknown to the virus writer. Besides
that, normal.dot -- because it's open whenever any document is open -- is
subject to semi-random corruption under certain circumstances. See
