copying certain section in a master word document

hi!

How can I copy text from certain sections from a given master word document
given that the layout of the document is fixed?  I understand that one way
to do this is to specify bookmarks within the document or specify a metatag
inside the document and find it via find method, then perform a copy
command.  However you need to specify tags/metatags within the document in
order for you to search and navigate through the document.  Is there any
alternative to this method?

Please do give your comments.

Thanks!

Monica

If the document is closed you probably have to use the bookmark solution.

If you can keep the master file open (or open it with code) you could
retreive any amount of text that you know the structure of. An example: All
text from the first Heading 1 to the next heading of any type or to the next
occurance of Heading 1 or any other style or identifyable object.

Hi Monica,

I'm not sure whether in saying "master word document" you are referring to a
template or to using the "master document" feature. "Master Document" is a
term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only doesn't work but
also destroys documents. The consensus among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm for more
information on what goes wrong, and
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm for ideas on how
to salvage what you can.

Hope this helps.
