ACC97: Remove method for Reference Object

I am running a class module in an ACC97 form:
The following line inside a form's click event causes a run-time error (
reftemp points to a valid reference):

Application.Reference.Remove refTemp

The valid reference is another ACC97 database that was made into a .mde
Does anyone know why this causes a runtime error?
Is it due to the fact that it is in a form class module and not a std. module,
or could it have something to do with the reference being to a .mde?

If reftemp points to the .mdb the code executes without error.

ps: the runtime error is a verbose event error
